# Update your theme

Get a new version of your theme without losing your settings.

When a new version is out, Shopify shows **Update available** on the theme in **Online Store > Themes**.

1. Choose **Update available**, then **Add to theme library**. Shopify makes an updated copy of your theme with your settings and content carried over. Your live theme isn't touched.
2. Preview the updated copy and check your key pages: home, a product, a collection and the cart.
3. When it looks right, publish the updated copy.

Changes you made to the theme's code are not carried over to the updated copy. Note them before you update, and add them again afterwards.
